Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

Crowns are tooth-colored caps that fit over your natural tooth. They restore the structure, strength, and function of a decayed or damaged tooth and also enhance the appearance of your smile.

Dr. Wilmore also provides bridges to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge is a dental device that uses a prosthetic tooth to fill in the gaps of missing teeth. The tooth attaches to dental crowns on either side that fit over neighboring teeth to anchor the bridge in place.

Why would I need dental crowns?

You might be a candidate for dental crowns if you have damaged teeth that cause pain or affect your ability to chew food. Crowns can address teeth that are:

  • Cracked
  • Broken
  • Decayed
  • Worn down

You may also be a candidate for dental crowns and bridges if you have one or more missing teeth. Dr. Wilmore also provides dental implants to replace one or multiple missing teeth if bridges aren’t an option for you.

All-porcelain crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns, and all-ceramic crowns are available in the office to restore your oral health. Dr. Wilmore determines which type of crown is right for you during a dental evaluation.

What can I expect when getting dental crowns?

At your initial appointment, Dr. Wilmore takes dental X-rays to assess the severity of tooth damage. If you have nerve inflammation or infection, she may recommend a root canal before you receive your crown.

Dr. Wilmore also takes impressions of your teeth to make a custom crown that fits properly over your natural tooth. She sends the impression to a dental lab that makes your crowns or bridge. You wear a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready.

At your next visit, Dr. Wilmore permanently places your crown or bridge in your mouth. Before she can fit your crown, Dr. Wilmore prepares your natural tooth by filing it down across the top and on the sides. She secures the crown in place with dental cement.

Crowns and bridges are durable and provide lasting results. You care for them like you do your natural teeth by brushing and flossing daily and scheduling dental exams and cleanings every six months.
