Do This Now If You Want Healthy Teeth As You Age

Most people become increasingly concerned about their oral health as they age, and we understand why. The percentage of people with tooth decay and tooth loss rises steadily with age, and many people need dental implants or dentures to replace lost teeth and restore their oral health.

However, if you take the right steps now, you can preserve your own healthy teeth as you age. At the dental practice of Heather M. Wilmore, DDS, in Houston, Texas, our patients often ask us for oral health tips and tricks, so in this month’s blog, we’re covering a few of our favorites.

Keep up daily oral hygiene

Daily oral hygiene is the foundation for healthy teeth long term. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are non-negotiable habits because they efficiently remove plaque and prevent gum disease.

Using fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen enamel, while regular flossing keeps gum tissue healthy. Consistency in these practices can make all the difference in preventing cavities and gum disease. If you’re experiencing enamel thinning — a common problem with age — Dr. Wilmore may recommend a special enamel preservation toothpaste.

Consider the high-tech approach to brushing

If you use a manual toothbrush, consider swapping it for an electric one. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology showed that people who use an electric toothbrush had an average of 18% fewer cavities and 22% less gum tissue recession.

Ultimately, over the years, study participants who used an electric toothbrush lost at least 20% fewer teeth than those who used manual toothbrushes.

Stay hydrated

Dry mouth is a common issue with age, and it can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay. Saliva helps neutralize mouth acids and flushes food particles away, so we recommend a few healthy habits to stimulate saliva production.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can reduce dry mouth significantly. If you’re experiencing persistent dryness, Dr. Wilmore may recommend solutions that could help — for example, chewing sugar-free gum helps stimulate saliva production.

Schedule regular checkups and cleanings

Regular dental checkups are a cornerstone of maintaining healthy teeth as you age. During these preventive dentistry visits, we can catch potential problems early, such as cavities, gum disease, or even signs of oral cancer.

Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that you might miss at home. We recommend visiting us every six months to ensure that your teeth and gums remain in optimal condition.

Improve your nutrition

Your diet plays a significant role in the health of your teeth as you age. Foods rich in calcium, like dairy products and leafy greens, help strengthen your teeth and bones. Limiting sugary and acidic foods can prevent enamel breakdown and cavities.

Incorporating a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals supports overall oral health, helping you maintain a bright and healthy smile.
